Summary

From the internationally bestselling author of The Windfall。 。 。 。 What could go wrong at a lavish Indian wedding with your best friend and your entire family?

"A witty and romantic novel perfect for all readers。"--Terry McMillan

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY MARIE CLAIRE AND NEW YORK POST

When Tina Das finds herself at a crossroads both professionally and personally, she wonders if a weeklong trip to Delhi for her cousin's lavish wedding might be just the right kind of escape。 Maybe a little time away from New York will help get her mind straight about her stalled career, her recent breakup, and her nagging suspicion that she'll never feel as at home in America as she does in India。 Tina hopes this destination wedding, taking place at Delhi's poshest country club, Colebrookes, will be the perfect way to reflect and unwind。

But with the entire Das family in attendance, a relaxing vacation is decidedly not in the cards。 Her amicably divorced parents are each using the occasion to explore new love interests--for her mother, a white American boyfriend, for her father, an Indian widow arranged by an online matchmaker--and Tina's squarely in the middle。 A former fling is unexpectedly on the guest list, a work opportunity is blurring the lines of propriety on several fronts, and her best friend Marianne's terrible penchant for international playboys is poised to cause all sorts of chaos back home。 The accommodations are swanky, the alcohol is top-shelf, but this family wedding may be more drama than Tina can bear and could finally force her to make the choices she's spent much of her life avoiding。

Infused with warmth and charm, Destination Wedding grapples with the nuances of family, careers, belonging, and how we find the people who make a place feel like home。

I am very glad for this impulse drug-store purchase。 Destination Wedding is a multigenerational story about one glittering week spent in Delhi for a cousin's wedding。 The cast of characters keeps the pace moving briskly, including born-in-America TV producer Tina, both her parents and their love interests, Tina's friends and potential lovers, an effervescent wedding planner, the drag-queen-by-night butler, and many more。 Mr。 Das is my absolute favourite character, and I laughed out loud with his I am very glad for this impulse drug-store purchase。 Destination Wedding is a multigenerational story about one glittering week spent in Delhi for a cousin's wedding。 The cast of characters keeps the pace moving briskly, including born-in-America TV producer Tina, both her parents and their love interests, Tina's friends and potential lovers, an effervescent wedding planner, the drag-queen-by-night butler, and many more。 Mr。 Das is my absolute favourite character, and I laughed out loud with his FitBit hack! There are definitely shades of Kevin Kwan's Crazy Rich Asians with the no-expenses-spared wedding they all attend。 I enjoyed the exploration of various kinds of love and the slices of Indian/American life portrayed。 Would recommend for a nice, fun read that's not too navel-gazing。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The opening sentences are clunky。 Thinking it might be annoying, I almost put it down。 I’m glad I stuck with it。 I was looking for a fun, easy read and this book fit that well。 It was entertaining, with lots of endearing characters。 I quite liked that the author made Tina so green when it came to the realities of India, and I don’t know why but I liked that she was just so snobby in general。 Her struggle to fit either there or in America was understandable, but interesting and a bit disappointin The opening sentences are clunky。 Thinking it might be annoying, I almost put it down。 I’m glad I stuck with it。 I was looking for a fun, easy read and this book fit that well。 It was entertaining, with lots of endearing characters。 I quite liked that the author made Tina so green when it came to the realities of India, and I don’t know why but I liked that she was just so snobby in general。 Her struggle to fit either there or in America was understandable, but interesting and a bit disappointing that she found herself when she found love with Rocco。 I read Rocco as white (I realize could be wrong), and it struck me that her permission to feel comfortable herself came from this white guy who was so comfortable by default and never questioned his belonging in the country。 Though he seems like an alright person, it bugged me a bit。 Maybe he wasn’t white though and I can chill out on that。 Would absolutely read a sequel about the making of Bubbles’ wedding planner show! 。。。more

A book that’s titled ‘destination wedding’ but the actual wedding doesn’t actually occur till the last few chapters。 overall i’m not into ‘romcom’ books at all so this was definitely a strange book for me to choose。 the plot was all over the place。 although it switches pov constantly the character development is just not there。 i wasn’t really rooting for anyone to get together at the end。 it is a cute book though, i don’t like to complain because yeah there are people who definitely would love A book that’s titled ‘destination wedding’ but the actual wedding doesn’t actually occur till the last few chapters。 overall i’m not into ‘romcom’ books at all so this was definitely a strange book for me to choose。 the plot was all over the place。 although it switches pov constantly the character development is just not there。 i wasn’t really rooting for anyone to get together at the end。 it is a cute book though, i don’t like to complain because yeah there are people who definitely would love this book, but i am just not one of those people。 would recommend for a summer read & to others to do enjoy romance novels, but mostly no。 。。。more

Quick, fun read that got more interesting toward the end。 I think the book might be better for those who know little about India vs those who know more。 I found some of the storylines to be too over the top but liked the theme of belonging/home。 I recommend The Windfall by the author if you’re choosing between books (and I thought the nod to two Windfall characters in this book was clever)。

It was a cute story but not as gravitating as I had hoped。 I felt there were some unnecessary descriptions, and character development was drawn out。 Parts were predictable。 Overall not bad。 Not sure I’d watch it if it was a movie。

A fun read! While some of the plot points felt a bit rushed (toward the end) or underdeveloped at times (class differences in India), there's a whole host of quirky secondary characters that are laugh out loud funny, and these folks really keep the story moving along。 Rarely do I say this about a book, but I think this would make a great movie! This reads like a Bollywood rom-com。 I thought this would be about the life of rich Indians but was pleasantly surprised at some of the social commentary。 I also have not encountered divorcee and widow dating stories among older Indians so that was fun。 However, the ending was very rushed and some characters’ story lines felt unfaithful to their development。

Fun read! Well written and gives good insight into Indian and American cultures。 Doesn't take the trite predictable path, either。 Very entertaining。 Fun read! Crazy Rich Asians, but Indian-style。 I always love a good book that reminds me of my pay grade, but allows me to be a rich Delhi-nite for the night。 Overall, I enjoyed the characters in this book and their backstories。 I had to take the a star off because the lead up to the ending was bland。 There was so much left unsaid。。。。 Pavan just disappeared。。。 no acknowledgement of Marianne's affair。 I think the author would have done major justice by having a final chapter that featured a fast forward。 S Crazy Rich Asians, but Indian-style。 I always love a good book that reminds me of my pay grade, but allows me to be a rich Delhi-nite for the night。 Overall, I enjoyed the characters in this book and their backstories。 I had to take the a star off because the lead up to the ending was bland。 There was so much left unsaid。。。。 Pavan just disappeared。。。 no acknowledgement of Marianne's affair。 I think the author would have done major justice by having a final chapter that featured a fast forward。 Something to tie up these loose ends left untied。 I would most definitely read a sequel if one were to come out on these characters。 。。。more

A fun read! Mainly set in India - I've been really into traveling via books so this was perfect。 About a woman in her early 30s (?) who travels to Delhi for a cousin's lavish wedding。 It has friendship, parental relationships, and of course romance。 A fun read! A good book with a good plot, but sometimes a little slow。 Would make a good chick flick perhaps。

I had such high hopes for this book, but just couldn't finish it。 The characters were not well developed and whined, a lot。 The constant change in POV made it confusing。 Just couldn't keep my interest。。。so I gave up。 I had such high hopes for this book, but just couldn't finish it。 The characters were not well developed and whined, a lot。 The constant change in POV made it confusing。 Just couldn't keep my interest。。。so I gave up。 。。。more

I really enjoyed Basu’s prose。 I read her for the amusing prose。 I love the social satire。 It’s also interesting when she examines the perspective of each of her characters。 Her wit is wonderful。 Here is one gem: Why go to heaven before you’re dead? DNF。 Big fat DNF。 Like page 34 of 320 DNF。 I like to think that I have a high tolerance for crap but I am NOT going to sit here, read and try to relate to a main character that gets drunks, does cocaine, and then drinks some more。 The cocaine is where I draw the line。 I'm not saying that I refuse to read books where the main character does cocaine。 Like if the book was about addiction or something I would read it。 But this is supposed to be a rom-com。 Why does it need cocaine? I should mention that this is not the only issue with the book。 I don't like any of the characters, I can't relate to them at all。 The author keeps switching between characters perspectives in unclear ways。 I thought a certain paragraph was from Tina's perspective but NO it's actually from Marianne's perspective。In summary don't read this book。 It's not worth it。 Save yourself the time and energy and go out and read a good romance book or some other genre。 Heck read your grocery list。 Just don't read this book。 。。。more

This was a bit of an odd read for me。 It was sold as a romance novel, but this is contemporary literary fiction, not romance。 Imagine my surprise at how just。。。 not romance it was? Is a story of identity and ambiguity and how people want certainty。 And how if we don't make choices we end up stuck, but that choices are fluid and even if we do make a choice, that can be incorrect and you can make other choices。 And that, eventually? Time marches for us all and that some options do end。 It's also got a bunch of commentary about the intersection of culture and class and how taking ownership of your place is ultimately the best option across the board。I'm just really impressed by this book。 。。。more
